Royal London Hospital — Atrium Restoration

The Royal London Hospital Atrium is a Grade II listed Victorian structure built in 1876, forming the civic centrepiece of one of London's oldest teaching hospitals. Wepex Heritage was appointed lead contractor for the stabilisation, restoration, and modern services integration of the atrium — a project that demands surgical precision on 148-year-old fabric.

The scope includes non-destructive survey of 4,800 terracotta units, lime mortar matching across 14 original mix compositions identified through petrographic analysis, and cast-iron column repair using phased nickel bronze welding that maintains structural integrity while restoring original profiles. The new roof glazing meets NHS infection control standards for air changes and UV filtration.

All work is supervised by Historic England and documented using photogrammetric surveys with 0.5 mm resolution. The project has become a reference case for the integration of modern building services in Grade II listed healthcare environments, presented at the 2025 IHBC annual school.
