Heritage & Restoration is Wepex's most exacting discipline — requiring the patience to learn how 19th-century craftsmen built before we touch their work. Our specialist team of conservation architects, structural engineers, and master craftspeople has stabilised and restored 53 listed sites across the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. Every project begins with archival research and material analysis, proceeds through mortar-matching and non-destructive testing, and ends with a building that will stand for another century.
The practice was founded in 1991 when Wepex acquired Whitby & Sons, a London-based conservation firm with 84 years of experience repairing Georgian and Victorian buildings. That acquisition gave Wepex something that cannot be built from scratch: a library of 12,000 historic mortar, brick, and stone samples, a workshop of traditional craft skills including lime plaster, terrazzo, and ornamental fibrous plaster, and a network of heritage consultants, archaeological supervisors, and historic building inspectors who understand the regulatory landscape across 8 jurisdictions.
Heritage work is not a niche — it is a growing market driven by urban densification, adaptive reuse regulation, and the recognition that embodied carbon in existing buildings represents an asset that demolition wastes. Wepex's Heritage & Restoration practice combines the sensitivity of a specialist conservation firm with the programme management and structural engineering capability of a global contractor. St. Pancras Chambers — Façade Stabilisation
Phase 1 of the Grade I listed Gothic Revival hotel's façade restoration. 84,000 terracotta units individually surveyed by photogrammetry, 2,400 units replaced with exact replicas fired to a match of the original 1873 clay body. Non-destructive testing identified 312 structural ironwork connections requiring stainless steel remediation.
Al Jahili Fort — Structural Consolidation
UNESCO-listed mud-brick fort in Al Ain, UAE, suffering from salt crystallisation and wind erosion. We developed a hydraulic lime-based grout matching the original 1891 mortar, injected 2,400 m of structural cracks, and installed a sacrificial render system designed to erode preferentially over 25 years.
Royal London Hospital — Atrium Restoration
Complex phased restoration of the 1757 Grade II listed atrium while maintaining full clinical operations. Involved reinstatement of the original decorative plasterwork, restoration of 2,400 m² of Minton floor tiles, and seismic upgrading of the 19th-century roof structure to modern lateral load requirements.
