History

1976

Founded in Houston. First contract: Port of Houston East Channel redevelopment. Three engineers, one borrowed crane barge, and a 50-page feasibility study that won over the Port Authority.

1985

First international project — Jubail Industrial Port, Saudi Arabia. A $180M marine construction contract that established Wepex's reputation for delivering in extreme environments.

1994

Concessions division established. First PPP: I-10 corridor, Louisiana. The $420M project proved Wepex could both build and operate infrastructure profitably over 35-year concession periods.

1998

NYSE listing. Market cap $1.4B at IPO. The offering was 4.2x oversubscribed — the largest infrastructure IPO that year.

2003

Energy & Grid division launched. First offshore wind contract: Cape Wind project, Massachusetts. Though the project itself was later cancelled, the team and expertise became the foundation for Wepex's now $11.8B energy business.

2010

Acquired Morrison-Knight Marine, doubling port engineering capacity overnight. The deal added 2,800 staff and 14 active port contracts across 4 continents.

2016

WEPEX/Lab digital engineering practice established. First project: digital twin of the Brenner Base Tunnel, which reduced change orders by 34% compared to conventional projects.

2020

COVID response: Wepex deployed 1,200 staff to build temporary hospitals in New York, London, and São Paulo in under 14 days each — a response that generated $0 in profit but immeasurable goodwill.

2024

Order book surpasses $38B. 26 countries, 38,000 people. Wepex is now the world's 7th largest engineering firm by revenue and 3rd by order book.
