Hospital de Sant Pau — Pavilion 04

The Hospital de Sant Pau is a masterpiece of Catalan Modernisme, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in 1902. UNESCO-listed since 1997, the complex comprises 12 pavilions connected by underground service tunnels, each featuring extraordinary tilework, stained glass, and sculptural brickwork.

Wepex Heritage was contracted for the stabilisation and modern services integration of Pavilion 04 — the former surgery block. The project required hand-laser cleaning of 4,200 ceramic tiles, structural reinforcement of the brick vaults using carbon-fibre wrapping, and the insertion of modern HVAC, fire suppression, and data cabling through heritage corridors without visible intervention.

Every intervention was approved by the Catalan Heritage Council and documented using photogrammetric surveys with 0.5 mm resolution. The project serves as a reference case for UNESCO on the integration of modern building services in Grade I listed structures.
