The Brenner Base Tunnel is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in European history — a 64 km rail corridor connecting Innsbruck, Austria to Fortezza, Italy beneath the Alps. Wepex led the North Approach consortium for Tube T-3, responsible for 22.4 km of twin-bore excavation through complex gneiss and schist formations.

The project demanded precision at every stage: TBMs with 10.7 m cutterheads navigated geological fault zones with real-time seismic monitoring, while cross-passage civils were constructed under strict vibration limits to protect the overlying alpine environment. A key sustainability milestone was achieved when 92% of excavated material was reused as aggregate within a 40 km radius, making the project net-positive on embedded carbon versus the EN 16627 baseline.

The tunnel forms a critical link in the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T corridor, reducing travel time between Munich and Verona by 75 minutes and shifting 80% of trans-Alpine freight from road to rail.
